Crowds on highways increased further

Dutch highways were busier in 2023 than a year earlier. Rijkswaterstaat reported this in a report on Tuesday, March 26.

The number of kilometers traveled increased by 2.9 percent last year to almost 70 billion. People also spent longer in traffic jams. The main causes for the traffic jams were rush hour traffic (77.8 percent) and accidents (11.4 percent). Work caused 5.5 percent of the traffic jams.

Dutch people were stuck in traffic jams caused by construction more often than a year earlier. The severity of traffic jams (the length of the traffic jam times the duration) due to maintenance increased from more than 443,000 kilometer minutes in 2022 to more than 834,000 last year. Most traffic jams were on the A16 from Breda to Rotterdam. The A27 from Gorinchem to Breda and from Breda to Gorinchem and the A10 between Amsterdam Oud-Zuid and Amsterdam Rivierenbuurt entered the top 10.
