Alternative for ‘Dutch reach’

Cyclists will be happy with new Ford Transit Custom

When getting out on a busy street, always be extra careful to make sure you haven’t overlooked a cyclist. If you’re constantly getting in and out, you might want to forget about that. The Ford Transit Custom has a system to come to your rescue.

With any car you run the risk of having a cyclist bump into your door if you are not paying attention, but with vans this is even more likely. After all, they have a slightly larger blind spot. A van driver often has to get in and out more regularly than a passenger car, for example parcel deliverers. Especially in the city center, if you are a bit unlucky you may just miss a cyclist, with all the consequences that entails. Ford would therefore like to highlight a (certainly not unique) system that is available for the new Ford Transit Custom and also the passenger version Tourneo Custom.

It’s about ‘Exit Warning’ and essentially it’s a kind of extended blind spot detection. We already know something similar from several other brands. At Ford it works like this: when a road user approaches the blind spot of the stationary Transit Custom at 7 km/h or faster, a light comes on in the side mirror and you hear a warning sound. A warning is also displayed on the infotainment screen. You can also turn off the system. It would be nice if you simply trusted your own alertness and perhaps also your ‘Dutch reach’.
