
When the local groups of various trade unions founded the “Gross-Hamburg non-profit small housing association” in 1926, nobody knew what would become of it. Renamed “Neue Heimat”, the company rose to become Europe’s largest housing construction company in the 1950s. Not only did the “Neue Heimat” provide millions of people who had been bombed out with a roof over their heads – to this day, its buildings shape what German cities look like and how we live today. The demise of the company, from which you could once order an entire city, has had a massive impact on the housing market in Germany to this day.
