In total, we consumed 346 petabytes of data in the Netherlands in the third quarter of this year. This is 346,000 terabytes, or 346,000,000 gigabytes of data. this is a huge increase compared to a year earlier.
More data, less texting and calling
In the Netherlands, data consumption rose by no less than 31 percent compared to a year earlier, according to the new Telecom monitor of the Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets. According to the report, we are calling and texting less and less, although this number is still quite high. In the third quarter of 2021, about 546 million text messages were sent and 11.6 billion minutes of mobile phone calls were made. This means that the number of text messages is 5 percent lower and calls were 2 percent less than in the previous quarter.
Mobile data usage, on the other hand, rose by about 12 percent in the third quarter. We all used about 346 million gigabytes of data in the third quarter. KPN and T-Mobile remain the largest mobile providers. Both have a market share of 25 to 30 percent. VodafoneZiggo is in third place with a market share of 20 to 25 percent. Providers without their own network, such as Ben, Simyo, Simpel and Youfone, have a joint market share of 10 to 15 percent.
Optical fiber
The report also states that 175 thousand households used a new fiber optic connection in the third quarter. As a result, there are now about 4.5 million households with a fiber optic cable to the meter box. This means that half of all home and business properties now have access to fiber optic. This number will probably increase further as a lot of money is being invested in fiber optics. This is not surprising, because fiber optic is simply a lot faster in terms of upload speed than coax cable. Of these 4.5 million, more than 1.5 million people have an internet subscription with fiber optic.
The cable is of course still widely used. About 3.5 million of the people in the Netherlands use a cable connection and 2.3 million use a copper connection. Of this number, a large part already uses fiber optic, only the last piece from the door to the meter box is still cable.
