Deep-sea diving with your Apple Watch: from Series 8 it’s possible (we hope)

The Apple Watch Series 8 will probably get a special sports version that allows you to dive deep-sea, among other things. This is according to a new patent from Apple.

Scuba diving with the Apple Watch

At this point, Apple says: don’t! Even with a brand new Apple Watch Series 7, you don’t have to try. Yet Apple’s smartwatch can be used while swimming since the Apple Watch Series 2. You can now forget about diving alone and especially deep sea diving with any version of the Watch.

New patent water resistance Apple Watch

However, Apple has applied for a new patent for the water resistance of the Apple Watch. The current Apple Watch uses an IPX certification to determine the water resistance of the watch. For example, the Apple Watch has had an IPX 8 rating since Series 2. This means that the watch is water resistant up to 50m. You can swim with it, but diving (and deep-sea diving) is really ‘not done’ with the current Apple Watch. This is because when diving the pressure on the watch is a lot higher than normal swimming.

From IPX to ATM

According to Bloomberg, Apple is now moving from an IPX rating to ATM certification. ATM stands for atmosphere and with this rating also watches for deep sea diving are certified. For example, a rating of 5 ATM already makes a watch suitable for swimming, but there are even watches with a 100 ATM rating that you can use for deep sea diving. If the new Apple Watch is going to get this ATM rating, you could wear your Apple watch during deep sea diving.

Apple Watch rugged

There have been rumors about multiple versions of the Apple Watch Series 8. In addition to the regular Apple Watch, a rugged version will probably also appear.

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg said earlier that there isn’t just an Apple Watch Series 8 coming this year. He said in one of his newsletters that an updated version of the Apple Watch SE will also be released. Gurman also said at the time that there will be a Watch with a more robust design. And that this Watch is mainly aimed at avid athletes.
