A developer has managed to make Windows 11 work on his Pixel 6 device. This is possible thanks to the Android 13 developer preview, a test version that received special support for so-called virtual machine.
Windows 11 on the Pixel
A lot of PCs can’t count on an update to Windows 11, but apart from that, a developer has managed to make the operating system work on his phone. A developer named kdragOn on Twitterposted the screenshots online, discovered that Android Police†
In those screenshots, we see the Windows 11 installation and performance in the task manager. At the bottom of the screen you notice a small taskbar as we are used to on PCs and in the comments we read that the software can be used on a phone for the first time. kdragOn used a virtual machine (VM), which is a tool that simulates a complete operating system that behaves completely independently of Android. Yet at the same time it is easy to switch between the two operating systems.

Android 13 and VMs
In the first developer preview of Android 13, Google rolled out improvements for VMs that make them run smoother on phones. Before that, the developers started working with a system for VMs that has been part of Chrome OS for some time. ‘pKVM’ it is called, or protected kernel virtualization mechanism† With this, the VM functions as a separate module in Android that can be updated independently. In earlier Android versions, you had to update the operating system in your VM via Android. That’s less safe.
It is not yet clear what Google’s plans are with VMs. Google may want to use the technology to make Android more secure by including a modified and simplified version of Android in the Android device boot process. What do you think Google’s plans are with VMs and do you see new possibilities if VMs work better in combination with our phones? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
