Nice car, isn’t it, that new Ford Mondeo? Just like a study model for the road. But before you run to the Ford dealer with flaps flapping in your hand, we have to disappoint you. The fifth generation Mondeo will never come to the Netherlands.
Car manufacturers are withdrawing from the d-segment. The large middle class – once the business car par excellence – is hardly loved anymore. The public wants tough SUVs, no matter how absurd that actually is. Citroën makes one last desperate attempt in the d-segment with the crossover-like C5 X, but whether it will succeed is questionable. Station wagons are still quite popular, especially in the premium branch of the segment, where the BMW 3-series, Mercedes C-class and Volvo S60 / V60 bravely stand.
Ford Mondeo disappears from the market with us
Ford is no longer interested in the Mondeo in Europe and leaves the fifth generation to China, where large sedans are extremely popular. The current Mondeo will disappear from the market in two months. Will he be replaced? Possibly, but probably because of something like a crossover or suv. In the United States, Ford has dropped all traditional models from its delivery program. The only non-SUV the brand supplies there is the Ford Mustang.
New Mondeo with features of study model
The new Mondeo – as it will be introduced in China – looks familiar. It has many design features of the Ford Evos: a study model that was unveiled at the Shanghai auto show last April. The Mondeo is a substantial car, with a length of 4.93 meters (plus 6 centimeters compared to the current Mondeo) and a wheelbase of 2.95 meters (plus 10 centimeters). It is powered by a 245 hp 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder.
