Dodge revived the famed Challenger fourteen years ago with a retro design. That model is still very much alive, but it seems that Dodge is already trying something for the next generation.
At the beginning of this century, Ford set a new trend by coming up with a retro Mustang. Chevrolet followed the same recipe with the Camaro and Dodge also hooked up with the classically lined Charger and Challenger. The latter is the only one that has still not started a next generation. The classic design proves timeless enough to continue to appeal to customers, and bold versions like the Hellcat and Demon keep the Challenger interesting.
Yet it seems almost inevitable that if Dodge wants to continue with the Challenger longer, sooner or later a new generation really has to come. FCA’s chief designer Ralph Gilles shares the above sketch on Instagram, pointing in that direction. The clearly futuristic but also classic lines are unmistakable as a possible Challenger (or Charger) of the near future. The large open nose with two light units on both sides has long been characteristic of the muscle car. Even the color fits perfectly with a Challenger.
If we take the description of Gilles at this sketch unfortunately, it seems to be a sketch that has not reached the next design stage. Still, it could be an indication of Dodge’s future vision for the Challenger. In any case, it is a hopeful sign for enthusiasts that Dodge is also working on the Challenger on the design table.
