For a long time, the Dutch could only dream of it, but cellular Apple Watches are finally working in our little country. This way you can find out whether your Apple watch has mobile internet.
Does my Apple Watch have 4G? This is how you check it
There are two versions of the Apple Watch. The ‘regular’ version only has GPS. To call with such a watch, your iPhone must be nearby. But, you can also use a so-called cellular Buy Apple Watch. This smartwatch is a lot more independent because it has its own internet connection.
In the Netherlands, only T-Mobile offers this for the time being, but it is expected that more providers will follow in the coming years. Speaking of which: you have to purchase a separate subscription to be able to use the internet on your cellular Apple Watch.
Look at the outside…
Before you do this, it is of course wise to check whether your Watch can handle 4G at all. The easiest way to check this is to look at the Digital Crown. Is there a red ring around the dial, or a red dot in the middle? Then your Apple Watch has 4G.
Apart from this, it is very difficult to distinguish the two versions based on appearance. They do look identical. It is true that the cellular Apple Watch appears in some exclusive versions, such as with a titanium housing. When you have such a watch, you also know for sure that it can handle 4G, because the ‘regular’ GPS version is not available in such versions.
…Or inside
Before you have mobile internet on your Apple Watch, you need to set this up. To find out whether it can handle 4G, you can of course just try to set it up. You’ll find out soon enough if this is the case:
- Grab the paired iPhone and open the Watch app;
- In the ‘My Watch’ tab, go to ‘Mobile network’;
- Now tap on ‘Configure mobile’;
- And follow the instructions of your telecom provider.
More about the Apple Watch
As mentioned, in addition to a suitable Apple Watch, you also need a special subscription to use 4G on your Apple smartwatch. This so-called Multisim subscription costs 5 euros per month at T-Mobile (so on top of your normal telephone bill).
It is not yet known when other Dutch providers will offer this. However, several parties indicate that they are “investigating the possibilities”.
