The double recording (dual capture) function is one of the new camera functions that Apple has introduced with the iPhone 17 series. This long-awaited position enables users to simultaneously record video with both the front and rear camera, directly via Apple’s own camera app.
The possibility is not new; There are already numerous third -party apps that made a similar function possible on older generations of iPhone. By standardizing it, the double admission now also works in the camera app itself. We explain how you can use this new function.
Double recording explained
Double recording is a video function with which you can film at the same time with both cameras from your iPhone-the front selfie camera and the rear main camera (picture-in-picture). The result is a single video in which you can capture yourself and the environment around you, perfect for vlogs, interviews, reaction videos or sharing special moments where you want to show both the event and your own reaction.

Use front and rear camera at the same time
- Open the camera app
- Activate the video mode
- Wipe up or tap ‘Video’ again
- Choose ‘double recording’
- Tap on the screen to leave the settings

Once you have used double recording, a handy shortcut of the interface appears in the top right corner, with which you can easily switch the function on and off without going through the full menu. Tap the rectangle with a silhouette in front.
Functions during double admission
During the recording, double recording offers various options, so you can adjust the interface and positioning of the double display. The small window with the front camera can be dragged across the screen to the desired position in one of the four corners. Do you do this during filming? Then this will also be in the video. All changes are stored in the video.
Availability Dual Capture
You can use double recording in the standard camera app on the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro (Max) and the iPhone Air. On older devices you are forced to use alternative apps.
Alternative apps
Some social media apps have users recorded at the same time as the front and back of the camera, so that they can capture unique moments without separate apps. An example is Cerealwhere users have to take a photo within two minutes with both cameras. This provides spontaneous images that display the real atmosphere of the moment, where the front camera is often bleeding to keep the focus at the moment.
The apps below offer good alternatives for users who want to make double video recordings on older iPhones or with extra options, outside of Apple’s standard camera app.
