Download Google Maps maps and save them offline on an iPhone or iPad

When you go on holiday, it is useful that you can save Google’s maps offline. This way you can always consult the map during your holiday if you get lost. You can also download maps in Apple’s Maps app

With the Google Maps app you can easily save a specific area locally on your iPhone or iPad so that you can always consult it later when you do not have a (free) internet connection. It is best to save the maps when you have a good wifi connection, for example you can do this at home. This way you do not use data for downloading the maps.

Save Google Maps offline

  • Make sure you have a connection to the internet
  • Open the Google Maps application
  • Search for the place you want to save offline, for example: Osaka
  • Tap the result found at the bottom (do not tap ‘Route’)
  • Tap the three dots at the top of the screen
  • Choose the option ‘Download offline map’

Now adjust the size of the area by zooming in or out using a pinch or spread motion with two fingers. When you are happy with the area you should tap the ‘Download’ button and give it a name.

The map will now be stored offline in the app for a year, which you can consult by navigating to the area. You can find an overview of all your offline areas via Google Maps ▸ three horizontal lines ▸ Offline maps. You can also create a new offline map this way.

Update or delete offline maps

  • Open the Google Maps app
  • Tap the three horizontal lines
  • Choose ‘Offline maps’

Open the area in the list here and choose the ‘Delete’ option. Via the ‘Update’ option you can update the same area again, so that everything is up to date and you can use the maps again for 364 days.
