Nowadays every brand has one or more, but when Ducati introduced the Monster in 1993, it was one of a kind. Never before had a manufacturer made the combination of a sporty block, the chassis of a superbike, a wide handlebar and ‘no fairing’.
Over the years, countless versions have been put on the market, ranging from a matte black Monster 696 as an entry-level model for the A2 driving license to the Monster 1200 R as the ultimate Monster ever.
Two years ago, Ducati completely overhauled the Monster and said it had gone back to basics: a sporty block in the chassis of a superbike, which in this case meant that Ducati had thrown the traditional lattice tube frame with the rubbish and had gone for a ‘Front Frame’ à la de Panigale.
The result: a 111 horsepower 188 kilo roadworthy sporty Naked, now simply called ‘Monster’, because there was only one Monster. Although strictly speaking there were two: the standard version and a 35 kW version for the A2 driving license. Both also available as Monster+. To add a Monster SP to that this year.
The Monster 30° Anniversario now presented is more than just a Monster in beautiful Tricolore colors, but has also been technically upgraded by Ducati, which has resulted in a Monster that is now 4 kilos lighter (and therefore weighs 184 kilos ready to ride), which is even more even more impressive when you consider that a fly screen and steering damper have been added compared to the standard version.
For example, the fully adjustable Öhlins NIX30 upside-down front fork is 0.6 kilos lighter than the front forks of the Monster and Monster+, which should have resulted in more precise steering behavior and improved feedback, while the aforementioned adjustable steering damper should have improved stability.
Also with regard to the brakes, Ducati has gone a step further at the 30° Anniversario by exchanging the regular Brembos for Stylema (0.4 kilos lighter than those of the Monster) and aluminum inserts in the 320 mm front brake discs (0.4 kilos lighter than those of the Monster), while the new forged wheels also save 1.86 kilos of unsprung weight.
