E.Go, based in Aachen, Germany, wants to start selling and building small, inexpensive EVs in Mexico. Expansion to other countries in the Americas is one of the goals.
E.Go first made itself heard in 2017 with the E.Go Life, a small, electric city car that aims to make electric driving accessible to ‘everyone’. The plan was to launch everything in the Netherlands in 2020, but E.Go was significantly delayed due to financial difficulties. The brand presented the Concept Cross in 2020, but makes no mention of actual delivered or even deliverable cars.
After a substantial investment round, especially from the Netherlands, E.Go is back. The German brand says it is entering into a partnership with the Mexican Questum and wants to not only enter the Mexican market, but also produce there. According to E.Go, the concept of both the car and the production process is ideally suited for the growing Mexican market. Questum, part of Grupo Quimmco, acts as an expert of the Mexican market and knows its way around the country’s auto industry. In time, E.Go must also serve other (Central and South) American markets from Mexico.
The communicated plans do not get any more concrete than this, so what will ultimately come out and when actual steps will be taken, the future must show.
132 km
The E.Go life is offered on the brand’s international website for € 14,330, but that gives a highly distorted picture. For example, that price includes a German subsidy of 6 grand and it is not clear whether VAT has already been included. We do know that the latest edition of the Life has a battery pack of 21.5 kWh, good for a WLTP range of 132 km. The top speed is 130 km / h, so the Life knows how to surpass the level of a microcar. The city car is 3.35 meters long, 1.75 meters wide and 1.59 meters high.
The whole thing reminds us a bit of the Think City, a similar city car from the early days of the modern EV. In the end, things did not end well with the Norwegian Think, but in Aachen the concept is apparently still beneficial. At least in Mexico.
