Maserati is on steam. The SUV Grecale will soon make its appearance and the GranTurismo will also make its debut in the not too distant future. The trident also comes with an electric variant of the GranTurismo, which has now been spotted in the snow for the first time.

A new GranTurismo is more than welcome for Maserati. The current generation dates back to 2007. The new GranTurismo has come before the lens of spy photographers several times and the brand itself already shared a set of images of the coupé. Until now, however, this has always been the variant with combustion engine, recognizable by the four exhausts that protrude from the rear bumper. However, the GranTurismo will also be available as an EV. A prototype of this has now been spotted in the snow.

The electric GranTurismo, which it is conceivable that it will bear the name ‘GranTurismo E’, hardly seems to differ from its brother with combustion engine. For example, it still has an open grille and the three ‘ventilation grids’ in the front fenders are also present. It does seem that the bars of the grille are slightly thicker than those of the regular GranTurismo. The air intakes on both sides of the grille have also become a lot smaller. After all, the electric motor needs much less cooling, which benefits the aerodynamics.

The remaining visual differences are visible at the rear. There is a cover for the charging port under the left taillight. The exhausts are also notable for their absence, instead Maserati opts for a smoother design of the diffuser. Broadly speaking, the GranTurismo E is reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz SLS Electric Drive of yesteryear. There are certainly differences with the more conventional version with combustion engine, but the electric version does not become a completely different car because of its electric heart. It is not yet clear how powerful that will be.

It is not yet known when the electric GranTurismo will be on the market. The introduction of the GranTurismo was actually planned for the end of last year, but due to the chip shortage pandemic, Maserati pushed the introduction of the GranTurismo and Grecale a lot ahead. The brand will unveil the Grecale on March 22, so the GranTurismo is expected to finally see the light of day later this year. Incidentally, Maserati is also working on the GranCabrio, for which a fully electric variant is also planned. However, it doesn’t look like that open boulevard cruiser will be unveiled this year.
