We look forward to 2024. That will be the year in which Renault launches a brand new compact electric hatchback. Indeed, we are talking about the highly anticipated Renault 5 that you see in these photos for the first time in production form.

Next year, Renault will finally park the production version of the 5 Prototype, which was presented more than two years ago, in the showrooms. The production version simply listens to the name Renault 5. It is an electric hatchback that you can consider as a modern interpretation of the R5 of yesteryear. Renault recently showed a silver-colored 5 Prototype and sister brand Alpine has already drummed up a conceptual variant of its sporty derivative. We can now show you the definitive electric Renault 5 for the first time.

It was clear from the outset that the production version would closely resemble the 5 Prototype. Although the R5s photographed in these photos are still fanatically covered with camouflage material in production trim, it is evident that the basic shape of the 5 Prototype has not been changed. In fact, even at a detailed level, the electric Renault 5 will closely resemble the concept car. For example, we already see that the Fiver gets taillights that are filled in in a similar way to the ones on the back of the study model. Unlike the first and second generation R5, the number plate is not in the tailgate, but in the rear bumper. The handles of the rear doors are incorporated in the window pillar. The handles of the front doors, unlike those of the 5 Prototype, are not recessed into the doors, but rather conventional in shape. We also see that the small side mirrors of the study model have been replaced by larger side mirrors. Furthermore, a piece of the large wide display behind the steering wheel can already be seen.

The Renault 5 will eventually push the aging Zoe out of the range and will become a direct competitor of, among others, the Volkswagen ID2, which will be launched a year after the 5. The electric R5 will be placed on the CMF-B-EV platform. Although about 70 percent of the components of that modular base come from the CMF-B platform that you know from the Clio and Captur, the manufacturer calls it a platform completely dedicated to electric models. According to the French, the Renault 5 will have a low center of gravity, a multi-link rear suspension and a battery pack that is lighter than that of the Zoe. We also now know that its electric motor is a derivative of the ones that serve in the Megane E-Tech Electric. The Renault 5 – which is emphatically not marketed as an ‘expensive lifestyle model’ – will not remain the only electric retro Renault. For example, there will be an R4-inspired electric crossover and an electric one Fourgonnettevan.

Short circuit

Does your brain also get stuck when looking at photo 13? Between the two packed Renaults 5 lies something that looks like a chip shop with an Audi nose lying on its side. However, it seems to be a ski lift lying on its side with Audi advertising (see photo 14). Special.
