Subaru is preparing to unveil one of its most important models in years: the Solterra. On Wednesday, November 17, the curtain of the fully electric SUV will be drawn in Los Angeles.
In Japan, Toyota and Subaru have been busy preparing an all-electric SUV in recent years. Or two electric SUVs, actually. Toyota kicked off by presenting its bZ4X and next week it will be Subaru’s turn to show its twin brother to the world. The Subaru Solterra is a true twin brother of the Toyota bZ4X, although you do Subaru short if you say it is a Toyota with Subaru logos.
While Toyota took the lead in developing the modular E-TNGA platform on which both cars are built, Subaru is the party that deserves the credit when it comes to all-wheel drive. The two Japanese brands joined forces to – hopefully – come up with a technological tour de force. The design is clearly from Toyota, because the bZ4X shows the necessary facial features that we know from the brand. The Subaru Solterra will only differ on a detail level, as was apparent from an earlier teaser image. The latest photo above confirms this once again, although we can already see that the Solterra gets slightly different light units.
A possibly bigger difference between the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra is the powertrain. That is to say: the Toyota will also come with front-wheel drive, but it is likely that such a version will not be on the order list for the Subaru Solterra. Subaru is of course a four-wheel drive brand par excellence. If Subaru is indeed only going for AWD, then you can count on 218 hp and 336 Nm of powerful electric motors that propel the Solterra from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds and give it a top speed of 160 km/h. In any case, the battery pack is 71.4 kWh in size and with that you can expect a WLTP range of at least 450 km – for the time being. We will know more next Wednesday.
