Two years ago, Sony unveiled a study model of an electric sedan: the Sony Vision-S. The car would not go into production, the story was told, and would only serve as a showcase for all kinds of new technology. But Sony decided otherwise. The Japanese electronics giant is indeed going to sell its own cars. These Sony Vision-S 01 and 02 are foretaste of that.
Sony unveiled the cars at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The company is just not generous with details. We only know about the Sony Vision-S 01 that it has two electric motors, with a combined power of 545 hp, with which it goes from standstill to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. The top speed of the Tesla Model 3-like electric sedan is 240 km/h. However, in terms of dimensions, the Vision-S 01 is closer to the Model S, which is also almost 5 meters long.
Sony Vision-S 02 is an electric seven-seat SUV
The Vision-S 01 is a five-seater. In the SUV variant – the Vision-S 02 – there is room for seven people. Both are on a platform of Magna Steyr. Of course Sony’s cars are full of technology: including 5G connectivity, Level 2+ autonomous driving, the ability to play PlayStation games, watch television and control the infotainment system with voice commands or hand gestures.
Prototypes Vision-S 01 and 02 are already on the road in Europe
It is unknown when the Vision-S 01 and 02 will be released. According to Sony, the testing program for both has already started. Since December, prototypes have been driving around on European roads. So it will be some time before we can get acquainted with the Vision-S 01 and 02. A test program for a new one takes many months and goes all over the world.
