Even more new iPads in 2024: this is what you can expect

Apple is likely to launch two more new iPads in 2024, probably in October or perhaps during the iPhone event in September. Here are the expected models.

Even more new iPads in 2024

The two new iPads that Apple will present in 2024 are likely to be a new entry-level model of the 11th generation and the 7th generation of the iPad mini. Both models have also not had an update for two years.

iPad (11th generation)

Apple last updated this iPad in October 2022. It was the biggest redesign since Apple reintroduced the model in 2017. The new flat design with lots of fun colors featured USB-C for the first time and added landscape stereo speakers. It was also the first iPad to feature a landscape-oriented selfie camera, something that wasn’t added to other iPads for a year and a half. The 2022 iPad started at $589 when it launched.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is now focusing on lowering the production costs of its entry-level model. It’s unclear whether this means a price cut for these new 2024 iPads, or if Apple is simply improving margins on the new model. After the Apple event on May 7, 2023, Apple lowered the price of the iPad (10th generation) to €499.95.

The 2022 iPad will have an A14 Bionic chip, and it’s not entirely clear which chip the 11th-gen model will get. Traditionally, the base iPad model has been 2 years behind in chipset upgrades, so the A16 Bionic is probably a safe bet. However, with the advent of Apple Intelligence, Apple may be changing that strategy, in which case we’d expect an A17 or A18 chip in these new iPads in 2024.

iPad mini (7th generation)

The iPad mini last received an update in September 2021. This was also the biggest redesign since its introduction in 2012. The 6th generation iPad mini had a flat design, USB-C and support for Apple Pencil 2. This iPad mini did come in less cheerful colors than the iPad 10.

The iPad mini does lack certain features of newer iPads, such as a landscape camera on the front and support for the Apple Pencil Pro. We expect these features to be on the 7th generation. But perhaps Apple won’t move the camera, because the iPad mini is used more often in portrait mode.

iPad mini will probably get the latest generation A18 chipset. That means the mini will also get Apple Intelligence functions. It is not yet clear when these functions will be available in the Netherlands.

The iPad mini 6 suffered from a display problem: ‘jelly scrolling‘. This caused one half of the screen to refresh faster than the other half, making scrolling feel inconsistent. Some rumors suggest that Apple will fix this issue with the next model. Furthermore, the iPad mini 7 will likely start with 128GB of storage, just like the iPad Air 2024. This is up from the 64GB of the current model. The starting price will likely be the same as the current model, namely $559.
