Faraday Future, a start-up that has mainly been in the news in recent years due to financial difficulties, is said to be in talks with Geely about the production of the FF 91. Sources told the news agency Reuters. Given recent developments, Geely does not seem like the wrong partner.
Faraday Future has been messing around for a number of years. After several rounds of investment and the appointment of a new CEO, the start-up has still not been able to get the FF 91, a promising electric crossover with 1,050 hp and a 130 kWh battery pack, to the production stage. Faraday Future was working on its own factory in Hanford, USA, and in 2019 it was claimed that the EV should go into production in 2021. Nothing seems to indicate that that goal will be achieved. That’s why Faraday Future is according to sources of Reuters in conversation with Geely, China. Exact plans have not yet been announced, but Geely is expected to build the FF 91 and supply autonomous driving systems.
Both Geely and Faraday Future have not yet commented on the plans. However, the fact that Faraday Future may want to work with Geely does not seem out of the blue. Geely recently entered into several collaborations with the tech industry, of which the joint venture with smartphone manufacturer Foxconn seems most relevant in this situation. Geely and Foxconn want to advise car manufacturers on future technologies and also help with manufacturing. Thanks to the knowledge of Geely and Foxconn, Faraday Future may be able to save a lot of money and that is quite welcome given the financial malpractice of the start-up. Whether the FF 91 will ever reach production stage … we’ll see.
