Life is never boring at John Vanderaart. Enough is happening to deliver a short column every week. This time John continues with his experiences with fiber optic. You can read the first part here.
We pick up where we left off last time: “Fiber Optic.” The first box was placed in the meter cupboard, a second box was sent by post, the good news arrived by e-mail. The second box had to be plugged ‘on top’ of the first box and then supplied with power. Don’t worry, there are 8 sockets in my meter cupboard. The second box had to be connected to the modem via an Ethernet cable. And in the meantime the ADSL cable had to be removed. Don’t worry, that was perfectly manageable. Then some work with the laptop, which – according to KPN – had to contact the modem with a second Ethernet cable for a new configuration. Don’t worry, it also worked via WiFi and I have the login details in Keeper. Anyway, 5 minutes later I went from 50 Mbit/second ADSL to 200 Mbit/second fiber optic. Yes, that’s how KPN likes it!
Not much later: “The front doorbell.” A bright 70’s from a street away, reader of PC-Active. Whether I was ‘that’ Vanderaart. Yes, that was me. He had lost his internet somewhere during the procedure outlined above. Because no laptop to begin with… Or maybe me? Yes, because – as above – no worries. Things already went wrong due to the lack of extra cash in the meter cupboard. The modem was stuck to the wall in the meter cupboard (exactly the wrong way around) with double-sided tape. As mentioned, no laptop, but fortunately there is WiFi on the desktop. Modem password initially unknown. In short, it was only fixed 20 minutes later. With pleasure, by the way. But what about all those other switchers? Something to hold your breath for, but with a bit of luck he will be the only HCC member in the neighborhood…
The second box that needs to be slid over the first box…
