Very strong plugin
Quite a few things will soon change in A4 land in one fell swoop. The successor to the current A4 will have a different name, body variants appear to be being eliminated and the RS versions will have a plug-in hybrid powertrain. These photos show the very first RS5 Avant in action on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.
The successors to the current generations of the Audi A4 and A5 will soon merge into one large A5 family. Audi wants to turn the A4 series into an electric model family, just like all its A and Q model lines with an even number in the name. The fact that the A4 and A5 will soon be known as the A5 naturally means that something like an A5 Avant will be available for the first time. Whether there will be an A5 Limousine as a successor to the A4 Limousine and a new A5 Sportback remains to be seen. Back to the A5 Avant. There will also be an extra sporty RS version and it is the very first Audi RS5 Avant that can be seen in action on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in these photos.
It is not only special that the successor to the RS4 Avant will soon be called RS5 Avant, the drivetrain that hides under the camouflaged body is also fascinating. The Audi RS5 Avant will have a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. In these images, the RS5 Avant can only be seen from the right side, the flap you see at the rear right covers the filling opening of the fuel tank. Previously we saw a wrapped RS5 Avant that also had a hatch on the left side. This in turn covers a charging connection. The question remains what exactly the powertrain of the new RS5 Avant will look like. Would 3.0 V6 be retained? Who knows. Maybe Audi will connect a 2.5 five-cylinder engine to an electric motor, or even a four-cylinder. The latter would not be so strange, given that Mercedes-Benz has also given the top AMG version of the C-class a plug-in hybrid powertrain with four cylinders. In any case, you can count on the Audi RS5 Avant to be a lot more powerful than the current 450 hp RS4 Avant.
The new generation of the A5 will be presented this year – just like the new Q5. The intense RS versions will undoubtedly take a little longer to arrive.
