First cars are taken off Fremantle Highway

This weekend, the removal of cars from the burnt-out freighter Femantle Highway started. ANP reports this on the basis of a spokesperson for salvage companies Boskalis and Multraship.

At the end of July, the huge freighter Fremantle Highway caught fire about thirty kilometers off the coast of Ameland. The Fremantle Highway turned out to have almost 3,800 cars on board, of which almost 500 have an electric powertrain. The presence of those electric cars would have made extinguishing the fire more difficult. The now burnt-out cargo ship has been in Eemshaven for a while and salvage companies have started there this weekend with the removal of cars from the ship, recovery companies Boskalis and Multraship report to ANP via a spokesperson.

For environmental reasons, the cars are taken off board via a special car wash installed on board the ship. The washing water is collected and discharged afterwards. The cars are parked in a protected area in the harbour. It is up to the owner of the cargo and the inspectors to determine what happens to the cars next, according to a spokesman.

Boskalis and Multraship expect the unloading of the cars to take more than a week. The salvage companies want to disembark all cars from the lower four decks during that period. The cause of the fire is not yet clear.
