The MPV is dying after death. In the market for new cars, that is. It is a body shape that has been or has already been said goodbye by almost all manufacturers. For example, last week Volkswagen announced that the curtain falls on the once successful Touran. Still in the market for a space wonder on wheels and was a brand new one already way too expensive? Then there might be something for you here.
Ford S-Max
The Ford S-Max (like big brother Galaxy) is no longer available in the Netherlands, but is still being built. The second generation of the S-Max will soon even have a hybrid variant to remain attractive in the markets where you can still buy one new. As a second-hand copy, they are still quite popular here in the Netherlands. Not surprising, because despite the fact that the S-Max has been with us for 14 years already, the design still looks quite fresh. The fact that the current S-Max is still very similar to the first illustrates this all the more. Nevertheless, the oldest copies have already plummeted in value, so you can drive one for less than € 5,000. Like this 11 year old example, for example. Who needs a little more space, can of course also look at the Galaxy for the same money.
Renault Scénic
An equally fresh-looking MPV is the third-generation Renault Scénic. Although the previous generation of Renault’s successful MPV is not as eccentric in terms of appearance as the current Scénic, the question is whether you should want that if you are in the market for an MPV. The fact remains that you can now park this still quite modern space wonder in your driveway for less than € 5,000. In terms of reliability, the third Scènic was also all a bit more mustache than its predecessor. However, they still wrote off fine and so you have this example from 2010 for less than € 4,000!
Citroen C4 Picasso
With the Xsara Picasso, Citroën managed to attract many customers as well as chase many people. The C4 Picasso came in somewhat less than a bomb when the French pulled the canvas off in 2007 and the design has aged quite well. You still see them regularly and the C4 Picasso is also widely represented on the used car market. Meanwhile, the older specimens also dive below € 5,000, also as Grand Picasso. However, pay attention with the older THP petrol engines, which are not exactly too reliable.
Opel Zafira
Of course, the Opel Zafira cannot be missed in this list. The first generation brought an enormous amount of Dutch families from A to B and the second also found a lot of sales here in the Netherlands. Although slightly less than the original Zafira, but still enough to leave a big mark on the second-hand MPV range. The dieselts may not be the safest choice, but there is also plenty of petrol versions. That starts with the not too potent 1.6, but fortunately there is also the more often chosen 1.8 still. If that is not enough, you can look at the Zafira with the 150 hp 2.2, as it has one.
Volkswagen Touran
Earlier, the Volkswagen Touran was already discussed, because as with a few of the above-mentioned cars, it also ends for the Touran in the Netherlands. The first generation of the Touran lasted no less than twelve years (thanks to a few side-sessions), so there is quite a few second-hand offerings. Below € 5,000, we mainly find many pre-facelift Tourans, but there are also several with the characteristic chrome grille. Then you only have the early 1.4 TSI in the nose and that is just a block that you would rather walk with a big arc around. A slightly older (so pre-facelift) is advisable in that regard. They are a bit cheaper, but if it can still cost around € 5,000, you can, for example, look at a somewhat thicker version like this.
There is more
You will undoubtedly miss some well-known and obvious names. What about the (sometimes larger) Renault Espace, Volkswagen Sharan, Chrysler Voyager, Mazda 5, Peugeot 807, or smaller MPVs such as the Opel Meriva, Ford C-Max and the Nissan Note. All available for less than € 5,000. Sometimes still quite new, sometimes (very) old. There is of course much more, it is just what you are looking for, but for a relatively limited budget you can at least already drive neatly and spaciously.
