The printer no longer works in Windows? Don’t buy a new one right away. Try to solve the problem first.

Every new version of Windows comes with some teething problems. A known problem is that peripherals suddenly stop working. Printers in particular sometimes falter after a switch to a new version of Windows. While not every problem is easy to solve, there are some things you can do yourself.

First, make sure the printer is compatible with the Windows version installed on your computer. Older models are not always supported anymore. The printer manufacturer’s website often lists which Windows versions certain printers are suitable for. Can’t figure it out? Then ask your question to the helpdesk of the manufacturer. This can usually be accessed via the website. Sometimes telephone support is also available. If you can’t get the printer to work, try the following steps. But there is a chance that the printer is too old for the new Windows.

Now we check whether the printer has been added to the computer.

  • Click the Start button.
  • click on Institutions. That’s the gear icon.
  • In Windows 10, click Devices > Printers and scanners. In Windows 11, click Bluetooth and devices > Printers and scanners.
  • Your printer may already be listed. Then click on it to connect. Isn’t this the case? In Windows 10 then click on Add a printer or scanner. In Windows 11, behind ‘Add a printer or scanner’, click Add device.
  • Windows searches for printers. Click on the name of your printer if it is found. Is the printer still not listed? Then click in Windows 10 on The printer I want to use is not in the list. In Windows 11, click Add manually.
  • A new window opens. The default option is ‘My printer is slightly older. Help me with my search’ checked. Leave it that way and click Next one. The printer may now be recognized by Windows.

Maybe it’s obvious, but are all cables connected properly? Many printers are connected to the computer via WiFi. Having trouble with wirelessly connected printers? Then connect the printer to the computer with a cable. There have been cases where everything suddenly worked again. The Wi-Fi connection turned out not to work properly in Windows.

Each device is controlled within Windows by a driver. This is a program that ensures that the communication between Windows and the equipment runs smoothly. It is important to install a driver for your printer that will work properly under Windows 10 or 11. Check the printer manufacturer’s website to see if a new driver is available. Can’t find the driver? Contact the manufacturer and ask if a driver is available and where to download it. Install the driver and restart the computer.

Windows also has its own feature that helps with troubleshooting. It works like this:

  • Click on the magnifying glass in the taskbar to open the search function.
  • In the search box, type ‘Control Panel’. click on Control Panel.
  • Under ‘Hardware and Sound’, click View devices and printers.
  • A window opens showing the connected devices and printers. Right click on the name of your printer.
  • Click on the shortcut menu Resolving problems.
  • This is a tool to diagnose and fix problems. Follow the steps. This program may solve the problems.
