Ford Transit Custom will arrive in 2023

The car is still a long way to look, but Ford is already planning its plans with the next Transit Custom. We now not only know when the medium-sized van will arrive, but also where it will be built and which powertrains we can expect.

Transit Custom is the second largest van in Ford’s Transit range, below its big brother simply called ‘Transit’. The fact that Ford is working on a successor is as logical as it is known, and we were even able to show a so-called ‘mule’ recently. Interestingly, the Transit Custom also comes on the market in a version of Volkswagen, as a result of the cooperation between Ford and Volkswagen in (among other things) commercial vehicle area.

Both the Transit Custom and its affiliated Transporter will be built from 2023 at Ford Otosan in Turkey, where three-quarters of the Transit model line is already being built. Naturally, the Tourneo Custom passenger car version will also be off the production line here.

Volkswagen

An interesting question is what the Volkswagen brother of this Transit will look like. VW has been testing for a long time with the car that we call the T7 in the corridors, the successor to the current Transporter T6.1. That car therefore seems to have little to do with Ford. Volkswagen may choose to develop the passenger car version in-house and leave the order variant to Ford, but the goal of the collaboration – to reduce development costs – is missed. Since this morning we know that there will be some news in the Transporter area this year, so much earlier than what Ford now foresees for the Transit.

Hybrid and EV

The new Ford Transit Custom will also be available in a fully electric variant, with which it competes with comparable electric buses from Stellantis and Mercedes-Benz, among other things. However, Ford agrees that such an EV is not suitable for every Transit job, so there are also many other versions. There is talk of Mild Hybrid versions, but also plug-in hybrids. A Transit PHEV is already available now and should be the ideal version for those who want to drive through the city without emissions, but also have a longer journey every now and then.
