Google Wifi users beware: soon you will no longer be able to use the app that belongs to your mesh network. Google has chosen to include those routers in the Google Home application, so that you can control all of Google’s smart devices within one app. In this article, we’ll discuss exactly what you need to know about the transition from Google Wifi to Google Home.
How do you make the switch?
Google has also provided users with a handy step-by-step plan that you can use to make the switch. By following the steps below, you can transfer your network in no time.
Open the Google Home app and tap it in the top left plus icon. Then tap Import Google Wifi network and tap Next one. Choose a house and tap Next one. Confirm your Wi-Fi network and tap Next one. Follow the in-app instructions to finish adding your network.
From Google Wifi to Google Home
The transition from Google Wifi to Google Home takes place in two steps. The first step is for Google to discontinue most functions within the current Google Wifi application. That will happen on May 25, 2021. The application is then not completely useless, but you can no longer arrange things in it. You can only request the status of your network. However, if you want to change something – like add a new point or whatever – then you need the Google Home app.
As of June – and the exact date has not yet been announced – it is also the case that Google will remove the Wi-Fi app from the Google Play Store and the App Store (the download stores for Android and iOS respectively). From now on, all updates are done via Google Home and new users are also immediately sent to that other app, so that no further confusion can arise. This is also the moment that support for the Google Wifi app completely disappears.
This change did not come out of the blue. Google has been working on this since 2019, when the Google Nest Wifi points were launched. Those new WiFi routers only work with the Google Home app, so users of the newer system already had nothing to do with the WiFi app. However, at the time, the Home app did not offer the same functionalities as the Wifi app. As a result, Google had to promise to keep the WiFi app alive until the Home app would offer the same functions. And that should have happened by June 2021.
Google says there are some advantages when you switch from Google Wifi to Google Home. So it seems like you have a choice, but in fact you don’t. Nevertheless, it is good to know that there are better video meetings on Google Meet and Zoom, for example. You also gain more insight into your network, through notifications when new devices join your network or detailed diagnostic information to solve problems with the Internet connection remedy. Finally, you have more control over your WiFi network at home; more than is the case with Google Wifi.
