To fuel? To cry!

If the cabinet does not take measures to curb the prices of petrol and diesel, a liter of petrol at the pump could easily be 21 cents more expensive next year than it is now. This is evident from parliamentary questions posed by Pieter Omtzigt.
In April 2022, the excise duty on fuel was significantly reduced. The excise duty on a liter of petrol fell by 17.3 cents per liter and on a liter of diesel by 11.1 cents. Half of that excise tax rebate expired on 1 July this year. The remaining part of the excise duty reduction will expire with effect from 1 January 2024. Fuel at the pump could become considerably more expensive from 2024 onwards. This is not only due to the recovery of excise duties.
An inflation correction will also take place as of 1 January 2024. The excise rates increase with inflation. The excise duty on a liter of petrol could increase by 21 cents per liter from 2024. The one on diesel with 13 cents. In its answers to parliamentary questions, the outgoing cabinet emphasizes ‘that the excise rates may still change as of 1 January 2024’, if the cabinet decides to do something about this in the budget. The House of Representatives, which is still considering all tax measures for 2024, could also intervene. According to ANP, the cabinet will negotiate on possible purchasing power measures for next year at the Ministry of Finance on Thursday evening.
