Gboard finally works a lot better on tablets

Since Google I/O 2022, Google has been working to optimize its apps for tablets. Google’s keyboard app is the next to work better on these devices. The beta version has now been updated.

Gboard now works much better on tablets

It is version 12.3 of Gboard and it introduces an improved tablet layout. This makes the keyboard app feel less like a stretched phone keyboard. For example, the keyboard is a lot bigger and that also applies to the background and the keys. They now have the shape of a square instead of a rectangle and that makes it easier to tap on them. If you turn your tablet into portrait mode, the keys will become narrower again.

To the left of the keyboard you will now also find Tab and Caps Lock keys and the Enter button to the right has become much clearer in the beta version. There is also a button to hide the keyboard on the right side. Next to it you will find the arrow keys that are very useful when you are editing pieces of text. Furthermore, Google has given the bar with suggestions at the top a makeover so that it can add another shortcut.

It is actually very special that it has taken all these years before Google came up with this update for its keyboard app. Gboard saw the light of day in 2016, as the successor to Google Keyboard. Little has changed in the tablet version of the keyboard app since that time. Now the time has finally come. At least, for users of the beta version of Gboard.

Do you have a tablet? Which keyboard app do you use on your tablet? Let us know in the comments.
