General Motors has won a special order worth almost €31 million. The American giant will produce ten special Suburbans for this purpose. What’s up with that?
GM Defense, the division within the American concern General Motors which develops military vehicles, will build ten Chevrolet Suburbans for the US government. Of course they are not just Suburbans, but specially developed versions that the American diplomatic security service will use.
The ten Heavy Duty Suburbans to be built will be placed on a specially developed ladder chassis and will have their own, logically reinforced, suspension. Although the technical basis of the ‘HD Suburbans’ is almost completely bespoke GM Defense makes grateful use of countless regular Suburban parts. For example, the body of a Suburban is simply screwed onto the new chassis and the interior is also from the regular ‘civil version’. The ten special Suburbans will be produced within the next two years. GM Defense says it expects to land a new order after delivery of the first ten units to produce as many as 200 Heavy Duty Suburbans per year over a nine-year period. US President Joe Biden wants the entire US government fleet to consist of electric cars. Or does that mean that the SUVs to be built by GM Defense will also become electric? Time will tell.
