The launch of the stable version of Android 12 is getting closer and that means that the new Material You design will be seen more and more. Google, meanwhile, is already busy providing its own apps with this, and the Calculator app is next to get a makeover.
Material You in Android 12
Android 12 features a completely new design called Material You. That design is an adapted version of the existing Material Design design language, and according to Google, it is all about the user. As a user, you can adjust the interface of Android 12 to the colors of the wallpaper you have set or choose colors yourself. Among other things, the clock, widgets and quick settings will take over those colors. In this article you can read what you can expect from Material You.
App developers can already get started with this new look, but since the stable version of Android 12 is not yet out (and the APIs are not yet final), most will wait. The developer behind Sleep as Android has already started working with it and Google itself too. The contacts app, the Chrome browser, Gmail and the camera app, among others, have been given a Material You appearance. Now it’s Calculator’s turn and Google has been kind enough to make the new look available to everyone, including those who don’t have Android 12 yet.
As you’d expect, Google’s calculator app now has rounded edges and round keys. You can choose three options in the settings: a light and a dark theme and system default. In all cases, the app uses the dynamic themes of Material You in Android 12. So if your wallpaper is predominantly purple, yellow or blue, the app will take over the color palette right away.
In this case, you do not have to run Android 12 to still enjoy this new look. Anyone with Android 11 can try Google’s new calculator app on the Play Store. Is there no update yet? then download the latest apk here. Of course, the app will not automatically adjust the background colors based on the wallpaper you have set. In order to take advantage of this, you really need Material You’s wallpaper-based theme system, which is in, yes, Android 12.
