Getting started with Pinterest – 9 tips

Tip 01: What is Pinterest?

Pinterest is the social network to create digital pinboards. You can pin pictures and videos of, for example, your favorite products, places or people, or share recipes, do-it-yourself instructions or funny videos. Under each pin is the source of the content, so you can immediately view the original website. Pinterest has experienced significant growth in the past year, and the platform has recently been expanded with new useful functions.

This way you can send users private messages to learn more about that one picture. You can also pin content to a map, to show, for example, where the photo was taken or from which country the recipe comes. Finally, Pinterest now also works with hashtags (keywords with the # sign) to quickly find Pins from a specific category.

Tip 01 Pinterest also works as an advanced YouTube search engine!

Tip 02: Create profile

You start with Pinterest by surfing to www.pinterest.com. Create an account by entering your email address and a new Pinterest password. You can also log in with your Facebook account details. When creating your account, you follow a short step-by-step plan. Here you can indicate which interests you have in life. After that, Pinterest automatically follows some boards from these categories, so you don’t have to start with an empty account. You can then import your Twitter and Facebook contacts, so that you can follow the Pinterest activities of friends and colleagues.

You can skip any step by pressing Skip to click, so you are not obliged to connect to other social networks. After creating a profile, you still need to confirm your email address via an email sent to the email address you entered. Eventually the home screen appears, with a stream of recent pins, which are images and videos ‘pinned’ by others. Click on your name in the top right corner, go to your profile and choose Edit profile to provide your account with more information and possibly upload a photo of yourself.

Pinterest has a female reputation: only 20 percent of users are men, and only 8 percent of all pinned material is posted by men.

This percentage should increase with more men in the promotional material. In addition to this setting, two more options are important with regard to your privacy. The first is Search privacy, this option is set to by default No. If you put this on Yes this will prevent your account from being included in Google. The second setting is Personalization.
