Google Assistant without "Hey Google", soon also in the Netherlands (Exclusive)

In the settings of the Google Assistant you can now find the so-called Quick sentences, Androidworld has discovered. That’s a feature that lets you give commands to the Assistant without saying “Hey Google” first. The feature isn’t working yet, but that may change very soon.

What are Quick Sentences?

With the Google Assistant you can play a nice song or control your smart lights in no time. Only it would be even smoother if devices could also work without starting every sentence with “Hey Google”. It seems that such a solution is also coming close in the Netherlands in the form of Quick Sentences. But what exactly is that?

The ‘Quick phrases’ for the Assistant have already been rolled out in the United States. They are a small selection of short phrases that Google understands without you having to say “Hey Google” first. You have, among other things, Quick phrases to set timers, to ask for the weather forecast or to control the lamps. Below we list some examples in English:

  • Turn the lights on
  • Set an alarm for 7 pm
  • what time is it?
  • What’s the weather?

So if you ask one of these questions while a smart speaker is in your living room, Google will answer the question as if the Assistant were a regular person in the room who knows the answer.

Only partially translated

It seems that Quick Sentences will also work in Dutch very soon, because Androidworld has discovered a Dutch version of the function for it in the Google Home app. In that app, press your profile icon and then: -> Assistant Settings -> Sentence to perform quick action. You will then arrive at the ‘Quick phrases’ menu. At the moment, we have only found feature on our Pixel 6a and the Pixel 6 Pro.

It is notable that Snel zins is currently only partially translated into Dutch. Most texts from this menu are in Dutch, but the Quick Sentences themselves are still shown in English.

To use Quick Phrases you have to manually activate them one by one via the plus button, but when we do that we get an error message: “Can’t add quick sentences”. In it we read that no suitable device has been added in the Google Home app. That is of course not true, because there are several smart speakers and smart displays set up on our phones.

Very soon in Dutch

What then can we conclude from this? That Google Netherlands is more than likely working on Dutch translations for the Quick Sentences. Once those are complete, the feature will work in Dutch. you can then say, “Turn off the lights” or “set an alarm for 7:00 AM,” and the Assistant performs the action.

We’ve seen this scenario before with the Assistant’s Routines as well. Then, with Androidworld, we were the first to discover the function in the Google Home app, even before it actually worked in Dutch. Not long after our discovery, Google Netherlands officially announced the news that Routines work in Dutch.

Earlier this year, Google also rolled out its Quick Sentences for other languages, such as: Spanish, French and Italian. It therefore seems logical that support for Dutch and other languages will follow after that. Also note that Quick Phrases in the US were announced almost exactly one year ago, on October 7th. It is therefore not inconceivable that Google will announce very soon that the function will be available for more languages. Exactly when that will be is not yet known. The chance is also rather small that the function was accidentally rolled out by Google, because a typical error looks more like this.

Do you already have the Quick Sentences?

There is also another way you can use the Assistant without “Hey Google”, but it currently only works in combination with the Nest Hub Max. Or are you from the future, then it will probably also work on the upcoming Pixel tablet.

Can you already find the function in the Google Assistant settings in the Google Home app? And does she already work for you? Let us know in the comments.
