Google Drive makes it easier for users to find the right file in the cloud storage. Google introduces several search filters for this that will be placed below the search bar. The feature is currently being rolled out.
Google Drive Search Filters
At the beginning of November, Google released an improvement for the search functionality of Drive. In beta, it tested several filters in the form of various drop-down menus below the search bar. This feature is now ready to be rolled out broadly to all Workspace users, Google says in a blog post†
To use the search filters you must first enter a search term and start searching. Then use the filters to arrive at the correct file in your search results. You can now search in Drive based on the following filters:
- File type
- People
- Location (of the file in Drive, ed.)
- Last modified
- Title only
- To do
As mentioned, each of these categories has a dropdown menu with which you can filter. For example, in the case of ‘File type’ you can choose from a Google Document, a PDF or an image. On the basis of the gif below you can already see which option you will find in each drop-down menu. You can also remove filters and that works individually or with all filters at once.

The new filters are available in Drive on the web starting today. We already see them in the editorial, but if you can’t find them yet, that’s not surprising. It can take up to 15 days before they are visible to every user.
As for the Drive app, there are no advanced filters yet. You will see some filter options on your phone, but it only concerns different file types and people.
