Google favors custom tablet apps in the Play Store

Google is coming with a stricter policy for app developers when it comes to devices with larger screens. On foldable phones and tablets, apps will be recommended in the Play Store in particular that are adapted to a larger screen size.

Stricter Play Store Policies

Google wants developers to optimize their Android apps for devices that have a larger screen space. Think of foldable phones, tablets and Chromebooks. It now announces that apps adapted to larger screens will soon be easier to find in the Play Store on such devices. They’re more likely to be recommended than apps that don’t use the extra screen space, Google says in a blog post

On the other hand, on tablets and foldables, a notification will also appear when users download an app that does not work well on large screens. Think of apps that don’t work in landscape orientation or have problems with a keyboard or stylus.

In addition, reviews also become more useful. Google already announced in August of 2021 that reviews will become more relevant and that users will see an adjusted score of apps depending on the device type that they use. An app can therefore have strong scores on phones and at the same time score a lot lower on tablets, foldables and Chromebooks. The new Play Store policies will come into effect gradually over the coming months.

Compete with iPads

With these new measures, Google hopes to improve the user experience on Android devices with a larger screen. It also fits in with Google’s efforts to better optimize the interface for such devices with the Android 12L update. Competitor Apple has been able to convince developers to adapt their apps to iPads for some time. It also released iPadOS years ago, which is a version of iOS better suited for large screens.

Although Android has a large market share compared to iOS in the smartphone market, Google has much more trouble competing with Apple when it comes to tablets. According to figures from Statistics Android is indeed catching up, but Apple still has a market share of 56% compared to 54% for Android.

What do you think of this effort by Google? With the arrival of Android 12L and with this decision, are you more inclined to take an Android tablet instead of an iPad? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
