Google Maps is still the most popular navigation app on the iPhone, and today’s update will only increase that further. The rollout of the update has already started, although we have not yet seen it on our iPhones. Since the update is being rolled out on Google’s server side, it may take a while for the Assistant to show up for everyone in Maps.

Now that the Assistant has been incorporated into Google Maps, it replaces the microphone icon you used to say a street or place name. From now on, press this button to open a small window at the bottom of the screen, in which the Google Assistant shows that it is listening.

With this you can, for example, adjust your navigation route, play music or start a podcast. Due to the limitations of iOS, it is unfortunately not possible to send a message this way via WhatsApp or another messaging service.

You can, however, ask the Assistant to send someone in your address book what time you will arrive at your destination. Since last year, the Google assistant just speaks Dutch, which makes it easier to quickly give a voice command.

The Google Assistant is Google’s version of a voice assistant, just like Apple’s Siri. Google has created a separate app to use all of the Assistant’s capabilities, which, due to the built-in limitations of iOS, works a lot less well on an iPhone compared to an Android smartphone.
