Google Stadia may be discontinued soon

It was already clear in 2021 that things were not going well at Google Stadia, but this year has not got off to a strong start for the game streaming service either. Google employees say to Business Insider that Google wants to close Stadia. It would make the technology available to other companies under the Stream name.

Google Stadia

Right now, Google Stadia is a standalone gaming platform: in fact, it’s one of the first gaming platforms to offer cloud gaming. You do not download a game on your own console or computer, but you play it from a server far away. It is therefore especially important that your internet connection is very good: the system on which you play does not need to have a lot of memory. After all, nothing big is stored.

However, it is not necessarily a subscription service: you can also purchase games on Google Stadia without a subscription to play in the cloud. You then pay full price (sometimes even a little more, compared to other game platforms) and then you have full access to the game. With a subscription you mainly have more privileges, such as better image options and discounts.

Game streaming service

Although it now appears that Google was heading in the right direction, looking at the success of Microsoft Xcloud, it now seems that Google Stadia has no future in its current state. The game service would be shut down, the employees say, freeing the technology for other companies to use, under the name Stream. Peleton and Capcom, among others, would be interested in this.

The news, if true, doesn’t come like a bolt from the blue. Last year, several top people left the game service, in addition to closing its game studio for Stadia titles. It now appears that only twenty percent of the team behind Stadia actually work on the consumer Stadia. While, according to the sources of Business Insider, significantly more employees (want to) commit themselves to the game platform.
