Google uses artist Drake to teach Apple a lesson

Google continues to push Apple to use RCS and is getting more creative about it. Rapper/singer Drake just released a new album and Google has already used one of his songs to teach Apple a lesson.

Rich Communication Services

RCS stands for Rich Communication Services and it’s about more than just text from one to one person. We want to send large files, high-resolution photos and we want to know when a message has been read.

The latter, that’s exactly what Drake’s song Texts Go Green is about. In the song he says about messages that turn ‘green’, which on an iPhone means that you are blocked on iMessage, after which your messages become green SMS orbs. Google explains in detail what the Canadian means by this in a message on social media:

“The Android team thinks Drake’s new song Texts Go Green is a real stunner. It refers to the phenomenon when an iPhone user is blocked or tries to text someone who does not have an iPhone.”

“It’s pretty tricky anyway and it would be nice if some super talented tech team at Apple could fix this. Only Apple can solve this problem. It should really just adopt RCS. It would also make texting more secure.”

Texts Go Green

Google wants Apple to make messaging better. With RCS you can send images and videos in higher resolutions, there are indicators that someone is typing, read receipt and you can send over data. In addition, message encryption is also part of it.

The reason Google is now addressing Apple about this has not only to do with the going live of Drake’s new album, it also has to do with the fact that the WWDC has just been, the event where Apple talks about new possibilities. However, RCS was not mentioned among those new possibilities, much to Google’s great regret.
