Herpes is an unpleasant matter, but it can usually be treated well with various home remedies. We introduce you to six natural remedies for herpes.

Many are familiar with the painful blisters on the lips, which always appear when you can’t use them at all: Herpes is one of the most widespread skin diseases in the world. More than 85 percent of the world’s population is infected with it, but only a proportion of them actually break out in the form of blisters. Herpes is triggered by the herpes simplex virus, and the disease cannot be cured. Anyone who has been infected with it carries the virus with them for the rest of their lives.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s stress, illness, hormonal changes or too much sun: Many causes can cause herpes to break out as soon as the virus is in the body. There is not much you can do about it, but there are some home remedies for herpes that can be used to relieve the symptoms.

These home remedies for herpes can make blisters go away faster or stop them from spreading:

  • As soon as you feel the first tingling and tightness on your lip, you can cool the area with ice. The cold makes it more difficult for the virus to multiply. If the herpes has already broken out, however, ice no longer helps. Important: Never put the ice directly on your lip, but wrap it in a kitchen towel. This will prevent your skin from being damaged.
  • If the blisters have already burst and are weeping, zinc ointment can help. Zinc dries out the affected areas.
  • Dab a little honey on the open spots. Because honey can have an antibacterial effect and thus prevent aggravation. However, only medicinal honey is suitable for treating wounds, such as Manuka honey from New Zealand and not the conventional supermarket honey.
  • Garlic is said to have an antiviral and disinfecting effect, which is why it is well suited to combat herpes. Simply chop or squeeze a toe and rub onto the open blisters.

  • Tea tree oil also has an antibacterial effect and helps with many skin diseases. Important: Never use the oil undiluted as it can damage your skin. Mix it with water in a ratio of 1:3 and then dab it on the herpes several times a day.
  • Black and green tea is said to have a healing effect. Simply pour hot water over a tea bag of your choice, allow to cool and press onto the affected area.

Important: The home remedies presented do not ensure that your cold sore disappears completely in a few hours. However, you can use it to support healing and alleviate the symptoms a little. If home remedies no longer help, you can get advice from the pharmacy about virus-inhibiting creams and herpes plasters.

Basically, you cannot prevent herpes if you are already infected with it. The pathogens remain in the body for life from the first outbreak and can always cause herpes. However, you can prevent further outbreaks by keeping a few things in mind:

  • Eat healthy and drink enough water.
  • Do sports and integrate exercise into your everyday life.
  • Maintain a strong immune system.
  • get enough sleep

  • Stay out of direct sunlight and use sunscreen on your lips as well.

By the way: Herpes can also break out in other parts of the body, for example in the genital area. However, cold sores are the most common form. The high spread of the disease worldwide is related to the simple transmission: Herpes is passed on through contact with smear infection. A handshake, a kiss or sexual intercourse are enough for an infection.
