The Hawaiian forgiveness ritual Ho’oponopono means something like “fix something” or “make up for mistakes” and has a long tradition in Hawaiian culture. The ritual follows the principle that all people are connected to one another – and the ritual is intended to serve you and others in solving problems. In addition, by performing you take responsibility for your actions and stand by their effects on yourself and others. The ritual also helps you develop more compassion.

The ritual used to be mainly used by the Kahunas, who are the shamans of the Hawaiian people, applied and handed down to this day. It was used a lot, especially in large Hawaiian families, to resolve conflicts and also to help with illnesses. The family then sat down, discussed the problem or conflict, and then performed the ritual together at the end.

That Forgiveness ritual Ho’oponopono works like this:

  1. First you say the phrase “I’m sorry,” thereby acknowledging what you have done and accepting it
  2. You then say “Please forgive me”, asking for forgiveness for your conscious or unconscious mistakes
  3. Next, you say, “I love you,” symbolizing unconditional love for the person or situation that led to the conflict
  4. The last thing you say is “thank you”, thereby thanking you for allowing you to recognize the problem and heal it

In the USA, the Ho’oponopono forgiveness ritual is now a recognized therapy. The ritual was particularly shaped by the doctor Dr. Hew Len.
