The Hawaiian forgiveness ritual Ho’oponopono means something like “put something in order” or “make mistakes well again” and has long tradition in Hawaiian culture.

The ritual follows the principle that all people are connected to each other and should help yourself and others to solve problems. You also take responsibility for your deeds by carrying out Ho’oponopono and stand for your effects on you and others. The ritual also helps you develop more sympathy.

Ho’oponopono used to be used primarily by the Kahunas, the shamans of the Hawaiian population, and still handed over. The ritual was often carried out in Hawaiian large families in order to solve conflicts and also help with diseases. The family sat down and exchanged information about the problem or the conflict. At the end of this exchange there was the common ritual.

As follows, the Ho’oponopono forgiveness ritual expires:

  1. First you speak the sentence “I’m sorry”. This allows you to recognize what you did and take responsibility for it.
  2. Then you say “Please forgive me”, which makes you forgive for your conscious or unconscious mistakes and apologize.
  3. The next step is “I love you” and thereby express the unconditional love for the person with whom you have been in conflict.
  4. Finally you say “thank you”. This gives you expressing your gratitude for recognizing the problem and healing.

Incidentally, in the United States, the Ho’oponopono Discard Ritual is also considered a recognized therapy these days. The ritual was particularly shaped by the doctor Dr. Hew len.
