How economical is the Ford Focus in practice?

Although traditional C-segment cars no longer lead the sales rankings, the Ford Focus still lures Dutch people to the showroom. One of the purchasing arguments of such a Focus could be the sharp handling. Is this sporty character reflected in a higher practical consumption?

In this article we will cover the current model generation that has been available since 2018. In the engine range we find three-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engines with 1.0 liter (100, 125 or 155 hp) and 1.5 liter (150 or 182 hp) capacity. Those who like a four-cylinder can diesel with a 1.5 EcoBlue (95 or 120 hp) and a 2.0 EcoBlue with 150 hp. Or of course opt for the Focus ST, the top model with a 280 hp 2.3-liter petrol engine.

Consumption Ford Focus EcoBoost

First we look at the Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost with 125 hp, the car of which seventeen owners enter their fuel receipts. They consume an average of 6.3 l/100 km, exactly 1 in 16. The factory specifies – for a station wagon – 4.8 l/100 km, which corresponds to 1 in 20.8. A deviation of 31 percent. That is a significant difference, but not unusual in this category. The most economical Focus 1.0 EcoBoost ‘does’ 1 at 18.2 and approaches practical consumption at 14.6 percent.

How are the five owners of a more powerful 1.5 EcoBoost faring? They show an average consumption of 1 to 14.1 or 7.2 l/100 km. This value deviates ‘only’ 28 percent from the manufacturer’s specification, which predicts 5.6 liters per 100 km. Would fuel consumption be affected by sportier driving? That seems to work out. Only one driver indicates that he drives continuously in a sporty manner. There is then a consumption of 1 to 12.8.

How much does the Focus Diesel consume?

The only Focus with a diesel engine in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor is the 1.5 EcoBlue diesel with 120 hp. Five owners note an average consumption of 5.1 l / 100 km, 1 in 19.7. A decent value, you would say, but the factory promises 3.7 l / 100 km or 1 in 27. A deviation of no less than 38%.
