How economical is the Kia Niro in practice?

Modest deviation from manufacturer’s specification

How economical is the Kia Niro in practice?

Kia is the largest brand in the Netherlands. That is a major achievement and is mainly due to the successful Picanto. The Niro is also a welcome guest, since its introduction in 2016, more than 50,000 copies have been sold. Whether the Niro is ‘the new Golf’ or ‘the new Astra’, let’s leave it in the middle, today we will find out how economical it is in practice.

Kia chose a striking strategy for its C-segment crossover. The model was and is available with three different powertrains: hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric. For the consumer, this brought several benefits. For example, the Niro always has an automatic transmission and is theoretically always economical. In the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor, a hundred Niro drivers provide insight into their consumption.

Mainly hybrid

The vast majority of Niros in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor are hybrids and of the outgoing model (2016-2022). Under the hood is a 1.6 GDI with a modest power of 105 hp and 147 Nm of torque. The electric motor makes a big contribution, so that the system power and torque are 141 hp and 265 Nm respectively. Values with which you can operate well in Dutch traffic.

With this combination of petrol and electric motor, Kia promises an average consumption of 4.4 l / 100 km, or 1 in 22.7. Dutch and Belgian Niro drivers show an average of 1 in 19.3, so 5.2 l/100 km. This means that the Kia Niro Hybrid consumes eighteen percent more than the manufacturer’s specification, which we sometimes see less favorably in this section!

Most economical and inefficient Niro Hybrid

That driving style and fuel consumption directly influence each other is proven by the driver who notes a consumption of 1 to 15.7. With every fill-up he says he is driving ‘sporty’ again and he has been doing so for almost 40,000 km. It can also be done differently: an emphatically economical driving style results in a consumption of 1 to 23.

How economical is the e-Niro?

Six drivers of a Kia e-Niro record an average consumption of 16.2 kWh/100 km. One of these drivers has the variant with the 39.2 kWh battery pack, the other cars have a capacity of 64 kWh. Remarkably enough, the consumption of the car is highest with this small battery, although you cannot draw any conclusions based on ‘N=1’.

Do you own a Kia Niro and do you want to know whether your car consumes more or less fuel than average? Then keep track of your refueling in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor!
