The profile shows whether a tire is worn and needs to be replaced. How much profile should a tire have before that moment has arrived?
According to the law, a summer tire must have at least 1.6 mm profile. For this purpose, car tires have edges of the height at various places in the profile. If they are level with the tread, then the tire is worn out and really needs to be replaced! We were talking about 1.6mm. That is the legal minimum, but we advise you to look for new rubber for the car with a 3 mm profile.
How much profile should a winter tire have?
A winter tire must have at least 4 mm profile to function properly. Once that tread depth has been reached, you don’t have to throw it away just yet. Until it has a profile of 1.6 mm, you can still use the winter tire as a summer tire. Keep in mind that a winter tire has different properties than a summer tire (and it wears faster in the summer because the rubber has a different composition).
Can I measure the profile?
You can see with the naked eye whether the raised edge in the profile is already level with the tread. You can also measure it. There are handy meters for sale for this, but it can be even simpler and cheaper.
You park the car and turn the wheels to the far left or far right (to get a better view of the tread. Then you insert a 1-euro coin into the main profile. If you can already see the golden outer rim, you should think about replacement. use a 2 euro coin for this.
How can I drive longer with a tire?
You want to last longer with a band? Then a regular driving style helps to reduce tire wear. After all, strong driving and braking forces ensure that the rubber comes off the tire quickly! So anticipate! Being careful around curbs also helps to make the tire structure last longer.
