How to Change the Font on Your Kindle

How to Change the Font on Your Kindle

A Kindle provides an excellent reading experience, but because you usually spend a good amount of time staring at the screen, it is nice if the font can also appeal to you a bit. Your Kindle has its own collection of fonts, which you can use to your heart’s content, but you can also add new fonts yourself. For example, you can change the font on your Kindle or add new fonts.

Although Times New Roman is a commonly used font in books and magazines, it is not the nicest font out there. That’s why you can customize fonts on your Kindle. This way you can choose which book you read with which font. Because how nice is it to actually read the Harry Potter series in the original font (or something similar)?

Customize font

To change the font, open a book on your Kindle. Tap anywhere at the top of the screen to open the menu, and click the ah-sign, then font. Tap it again ah-tje to see a list of the different preinstalled fonts. For example, you can choose Futura, a round, sans serif, or OpenDyslexic, a font specially made to make the text easier to read for people with dyslexia. In the screen you can also choose to increase or decrease the font size.

Download new fonts

But you’re not tied to the fonts as Amazon has them pre-installed on the Kindle by default. Just like on a computer or laptop, you can download new fonts and use them to read your books.

Comic Sans MS on your Kindle? Why not!

First of all, check which fonts are already on your computer. On Windows, in File Explorer, go to C:WindowsFonts, on a Mac open the program Font Catalog (if the font you want to use is greyed out, you must first download it using the button at the top right). Do you want to use other fonts that are not yet on your computer? Fonts can be downloaded from several places, but Google Fonts may be your safest and best option. Looking for something a little more obscure fonts? on DaFont you will find countless homemade or counterfeit fonts. Kindle supports all common formats (TTF, OTC, and TTC).

Installing Fonts on Your Kindle

Once you have downloaded a font and installed it on your computer, you can put it on your Kindle. Connect your Kindle to your computer or laptop via the USB cable and open it in File Explorer. You should now see a folder named fonts. Open that folder, and you’ll see the pre-installed fonts.

Now locate the TTF, OTC, or TTC file on your computer and drag it into your Kindle’s Fonts folder. Eject the Kindle and repeat the steps from the first paragraph. Now the new font should be in the font list, and you can use it.

It is important to know that this method only works with books that you have downloaded or purchased directly and officially from the Amazon store. Books that you have loaded onto your Kindle in any other way will not work with the downloaded fonts.
