Odido warns against 5 forms of scams

The data breach at Odido is one of the largest ever in the Netherlands. According to Odido, names, addresses, mobile numbers, customer numbers, email addresses, account numbers, dates of birth and passport and driver’s license numbers have been leaked.

Huge data breach at Odido: beware of these 5 types of scams

In the email that Odido and Ben sent to customers (and also on the information page), five types of scams are listed that you should be alert to. Some of these are quite obvious, but it is always good to go over them again. We list them for you:

1. Pay attention to suspicious messages and phone calls

Are you being called, texted or emailed by someone claiming to be from Odido, Ben or your bank? Then be extra careful. Because cyber criminals now have your name, address, telephone number, email address and account number, they appear a lot more reliable. Don’t fall for that!

Never just click on a link in an email, text message or WhatsApp message. First check carefully who the message came from. Don’t trust telephone numbers you don’t know and look carefully at what’s behind the @ sign in an email address. If an email from Odido as in the image below says @mail.odido.nl or @odido.nl, then you know it is not a scam.

3. Unexpected phone call? Hang up and call back yourself

Do you unexpectedly receive a call from an unknown number and says the caller is from your bank or provider? Then ask the caller for his/her first and last name. Indicate that you will end the call and call back yourself. Then call the company’s general number. If you can get the same employee on the phone, you know everything is going well.

4. Never share your password or PIN code

No company will ask for your password, PIN or full verification codes. Only scammers regularly try to get such information with excuses. Therefore, always remember that your password and PIN code are strictly personal and that you should never share them with anyone.

5. Check invoices extra carefully

With the leaked information, cybercriminals can send fake invoices that appear to come from Odido or Ben. Therefore, always check carefully whether the invoice is correct. A convenient way is to log in to ‘My Odido‘ or ‘My Ben‘. There you can find all invoices and easily check whether the received invoice is also visible there. Isn’t that the case? Then it is probably a scam – do not pay and contact Odido.
