Significantly more fines have been handed out in 2021 for ignoring a red cross. NOS writes this on the basis of information from Rijkswaterstaat.
Road inspectors of Rijkswaterstaat issued 5,824 fines last year for ignoring a red cross. To put that into perspective: in 2020 4,900 receipts were written for the same violation, so in 2021 this is an increase of roughly 20 percent.
Motorists deliberately ignore a red cross or drive too long on a closed lane to appropriate a spot on the open asphalt just a little further. It also seems that not everyone actually sees a red cross, perhaps because he or she is distracted by a telephone. The figures from Rijkswaterstaat also show that arrow trucks and the colliders or crash absorbers were hit almost twice as often (40 times) than a year earlier (22 times). Rijkswaterstaat does, however, note that there will be more road works in 2021.
