Major changes are coming from January 2026, because the payment service iDEAL will disappear permanently. You will notice this!
iDEAL disappears
Do you regularly make purchases in web shops or other online stores? In that case, you have undoubtedly used iDEAL before. iDEAL is currently the most used online payment method in the Netherlands. The Dutch payment system has been the standard for most internet payments since 2005, but this will change from 2026. iDEAL will no longer be used for direct online transfers to various bank accounts.
Instead, you will soon use Wero to make online payments. Wero is a completely new European payment system that should make both digital and physical transactions easier. Wero is already in use in countries such as Belgium, Germany and France, and the Netherlands will follow soon. You will notice this next month, because the transition phase from iDEAL to Wero will start in January 2026.
Wero from January 2026
From January 2026, a new logo will appear when making online payments. Where you currently see the iDEAL logo, next month it will be a combined logo with Wero. In this way, Wero is introduced to all users. Nothing else has changed yet, iDEAL will not disappear yet and transactions will work in the same way. In the background, the launch of Wero is further prepared for the end of 2026.
In the second half of 2026, the iDEAL logo will increasingly fade into the background. Wero then comes into the picture more clearly as the replacement for iDEAL. Wero will be available to most users at the end of 2026 or early 2027. It is not yet clear what exactly you will notice from this. It is clear that Wero has several advantages, for example, making cross-border payments in Europe becomes much easier with the new payment system.
Benefits of Wero
With Wero, the Dutch iDEAL is replaced by a European payment platform. Wero works throughout Europe and is an alternative to well-known payment systems such as Visa and Mastercard. In addition, Wero offers more advantages compared to iDEAL. Wero is faster, you can send payment requests more easily and the transaction costs with the new payment service are lower.
The transition period to Wero will start in January 2026, but it is expected that iDEAL will not disappear until 2027. All shops and other points of sale must switch to the new payment system and adapt the digital environment to Wero. Good to know: users do not have to do anything themselves when switching from iDEAL to Wero. So pay close attention if you receive a message or email that requires you to do something, because in that case it is a potentially dangerous spam message. Delete that message immediately and never share personal (bank) information.
