IFA 2020: Thursday round-up

IFA 2020

We have seen busier times in the first week of September. IFA 2020 will go down as one of the quietest versions of the European tech fair, but luckily there are still things to look forward to. For example, to the products from our Thursday round-up.

Philips Hue Ensis pendant lamp

We had already paid attention to this on Computer! Totaal, including the Philips Hue Play Gradient Lightstrip for behind every television, but we would like to focus the viewer on the Ensis pendant lamp.

Previously, this lamp was already available with only white lamps, but now there is also a variant that supports color. And because the wide light bar has lamps both below and above, you can create a unique atmosphere in the house. You can give the ceiling a romantic color, while you make the light at the table soft and warm during dinner. And that’s just one of the possibilities with the Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance Ensis.

The Philips Hue White and color ambiance Ensis pendant lamp in black will be on sale from October 20 for a suggested retail price of EUR 399.99.

Skullcandy Crusher Evo

We have no shortage of headphones. Each manufacturer does its best to set their headphones apart from the rest. Skullcandy is therefore introducing the Crusher Evo during IFA 2020. The Crusher Evo makes good use of two striking audio developments: an improved version of Skullcandy’s patented Sensory Haptic Bass and Personal Sound from Audiodo.

The latter is audio personalization technology offered through the Skullcandy App. You also use this app to connect the headphones to your smartphone. After pairing, the headset performs an audio test and creates a personal user profile.

The Skullcandy Crusher Evo has a battery that lasts up to 40 hours and is charged within ten minutes for four hours of use. Media controls are incorporated in the headphones, so you can perform various actions without touching your smartphone. In addition, there is support for Google Assistant, Siri and Tile, so that you don’t just lose your Evo.

Crusher Evo is now available in True Black and Chill Gray for 169.99 euros.

More cheaper 5g smartphones on the way

Chip supplier Qualcomm also made itself heard during IFA 2020. The company says that the (as yet unannounced) new 4-series smartphone processors will support 5g networks. It is an entry-level processor, intended for cheaper phones.

That means that we can expect more smartphones in the short term that are affordable and that offer support for 5g. Xiaomi, Oppo and Motorola have already announced that smartphones will be arriving that support the new processor. It is still a while to see what those phones will look like and what functions they offer, because there is no further information available.

Qualcomm has also not announced anything about the new chip series.

Project Archery 3.0 from TCL

TCL is again present this year with Project Archery, version 3.0. These are smart glasses with two OLED screens that tell your brain that you are looking at a screen in the cinema. Last year, the manufacturer brought version 2.0, and version 3.0 is slightly different.

For example, the latest version of the experimental project is a lot lighter than its predecessor. The product now also looks more like sunglasses than a real gadget. However, the prototype is still bulky enough to attract attention when you sit on a terrace with it, but in this case the following applies: help all steps forward.

TCL also announces that work is being done behind the scenes on a version of Project Archery that takes into account people who normally wear glasses or lenses. That specific version allows you to take off your lenses or take off your glasses, so that you can watch the images on the OLED screens undisturbed.

Whether we will see this product in the store in the short term is not certain at the moment. The company has not disclosed anything about this.

TCL MoveTime Family Watch

A product that we can expect from TCL this fall is the TCL MoveTime Family Watch. This is a smartwatch for seniors, including fall detection, activity tracking, a heart rate monitor and hands-free calling. The device must ensure that seniors can remain independent for as long as possible.

Furthermore, the smartwatch offers reminders for taking medication and performing various activities to improve health. Should someone fall, family members will be notified of the fall, including the location, within 60 seconds. This way they can quickly come to the rescue. Also, the smart watch notifies the wearer when the heart rate is unusually low or high.

The OLED screen has a size of 41 by 48.5 millimeters and offers larger, optimized icons. There is also an ip67 certificate. The TCL MoveTime Family Watch is on sale this fall in Europe for 229 euros.
