Ineos Grenadier (finally) in production

Overcome the problems

Ineos Grenadier (finally) in production

We’ve written about Ineos quite a few times and even drove a prototype of the Grenadier, but the brand has never produced a car for a customer. That has now changed: the first Ineos Grenadier has rolled off the production line. From December, the first copies of the ‘new Defender’ will find their way to customers.

In 2016, Ineos CEO Jim Ratcliffe announced his intention to resume production of the Land Rover Defender. Yes, it has been six years since the original Defender went out of production. Ratcliffe’s plan could not go ahead due to the lack of proper patents. In 2019, Ineos revealed that it would come with its own car in the spirit of the original Defender. That became the Grenadier.

We first saw it in 2020 and it is now going into production. That should have happened earlier, but due to all kinds of shortages and problems, it didn’t work out. Initially, Ineos only produces Grenadiers with combustion engines: six-in-line diesel and petrol engines from BMW. In the future, there may also be a variant with a fuel cell and one with an electric powertrain with only a battery. For the time being, Ineos has plenty to do: more than 15,000 Grenadiers have been ordered in recent years.

Production start Ineos Grenadier

A happy moment for the team behind the Ineos Grenadier.
