Intermediate version: Volkswagen Golf R is back and has 333 hp

At Volkswagen, 2024 is the year of the facelifted Volkswagen Golf. This will soon also include a facelifted version of the absolute sporty top version: the Golf R. The Volkswagen Golf R is back in the Netherlands after a small break. Just with the appearance it already had, but with more horsepower than ever.

In December, the 320 hp Volkswagen Golf R disappeared from the Dutch price list. Just for a short time. The hot-tempered four-wheel drive sporty top version is now back in the Netherlands. To be clear: this concerns the Volkswagen Golf R from before the facelift. The new Volkswagen Golf may have already been presented, but we will have to wait a little longer for the arrival of the facelifted Volkswagen Golf R. Is the returned Golf R completely as it was? No. Certainly not!

The Volkswagen Golf R previously had a 320 hp and 420 Nm strong 2.0 TSI. There were stronger versions of the Golf R, but they were always limited editions. Consider this Volkswagen Golf R 20 Years and this Golf R 333 Limited Edition. They also had a 2.0 TSI, but a version boosted to 333 hp. What seems? The ‘normal’ Volkswagen Golf R that has now returned to the Netherlands is now also 333 hp strong!

The 333 hp Volkswagen Golf R has, as before, a seven-speed DSG transmission. The Golf R reaches a speed of 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of – hold on – 270 km/h to its name. That top speed points to something interesting. Normally the Golf R reached a top speed of 250 km/h, unless you went for the optional R Performance package. In addition to a roof spoiler and a drift mode, this also brings a higher top speed of 270 km/h to the Golf R. The R Performance package is now standard. The 19-inch wheels and chrome dual exhaust tips are also part of that package. Akrapoviç’s R Performance exhaust remains optional (€4,020). You also have to pay extra for the characteristic blue color – called Lapiz Blue: €1,090.

The fact that the R Performance package is now standard also explains why the Golf R is now more expensive than it was. The Volkswagen Golf R now changes owners from €84,990, just under 4 grand more than before. The Volkswagen Golf R Variant is not available.

Renewed Golf R

Volkswagen recently showed the facelifted Volkswagen Golf R in a sticker sheet printed with a psychedelic print. The updated Golf R gets different bumper work and of course benefits from the changes that also apply to the milder versions of the updated Golf. We expect – as we wrote earlier – that the facelifted Volkswagen Golf R will also soon have 333 hp.
